Neuroleptic depression is a severe mental condition that is characterized by prolonged and deep depression, decreased activity, loss of interest in life, apathy and depressive thoughts about oneself and one’s relationships with others. This disorder is often associated with antipsychotic medications, which are used to treat a variety of mental disorders, including schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, mood disorders, and others. Although neuroleptic depression can be diagnosed after taking antipsychotic drugs, its symptoms and manifestations can be observed in people who do not take these drugs and may appear for several weeks or months after starting use of antipsychotic drugs. Treatment of neuroleptic depression involves changes in a person's lifestyle and behavior, which may include psychological support, medication therapy, changes in diet and physical activity, and referral to a specialist who can help develop a treatment plan and support.
