Diazide

Dyazide: a combination diuretic for the treatment of hypertension and edema syndrome

Dyazide is a combination diuretic consisting of hydrochlorothiazide and triamterene. It is manufactured by Smithkline Beecham in the United States of America and is used to treat arterial hypertension and edema syndrome of various origins.

The dosage form of Diazide is capsules, 12.5 mg of hydrochlorothiazide and 25 mg of triamterene. Hydrochlorothiazide is a thiazide diuretic that increases the excretion of sodium and chloride from the body, thereby reducing blood volume and blood pressure. Triamterene is a potassium-sparing diuretic that reduces potassium excretion from the body and promotes its retention in the kidneys, which helps maintain the body's electrolyte balance.

Indications for the use of Dyazide include arterial hypertension, edema syndrome in chronic heart failure, liver and kidney diseases. It can also be used as maintenance therapy in the treatment of heart failure with glycosides in patients with a tendency to form edema.

However, Dyazid has contraindications and side effects. It is contraindicated in cases of hypersensitivity (including to sulfonamides), renal failure, anuria, acute glomerulonephritis, severe liver dysfunction, hypokalemia, hyperkalemia, hypercalcemia, hyponatremia and hypovolemia. Contraindicated during pregnancy, and breastfeeding should be discontinued during treatment.

Side effects of Dyazide may include drowsiness, headache, ECG changes, palpitations, low blood pressure, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, changes in electrolyte levels, allergic reactions and other symptoms.

The interaction of Dyazide with other drugs should also be taken into account. Some antihypertensive drugs, diuretics, barbiturates, phenothiazines, tricyclic antidepressants and vasodilators can enhance the hypotensive effect of Dyazide, and NSAIDs, on the contrary, weaken its effect.

In general, Dyazide is an effective drug when used correctly, but it should be used only as prescribed by a doctor and with caution taking into account contraindications, side effects and interactions with other drugs. Patients should monitor their condition and report to their doctor any unwanted effects or changes in health that may occur during treatment with Dyazide.
