Diltiazem Hydrochloride: description, use, side effects and contraindications

Diltiazem hydrochloride is a drug belonging to the group of calcium channel blockers of the benzodiazepine group. This drug is widely used in the treatment of various diseases of the cardiovascular system, such as angina, hypertension and arrhythmias.

Diltiazem is manufactured by World Pharmaceutical in the United States of America and is available in various dosage forms, including 30 mg, 60 mg, 90 mg and 120 mg film-coated tablets. The active ingredient of the drug is Diltiazem.

Uses of Diltiazem hydrochloride

Diltiazem is used to treat angina pectoris, arterial hypertension, and also in cases where beta-blockers are contraindicated. In addition, the drug can be used to prevent coronary spasm during coronary angiography or coronary artery bypass surgery.

Diltiazem can also be used to treat arrhythmias, including ventricular fibrillation and flutter and paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia, and to relieve paroxysmal atrial fibrillation in combination with digoxin.

Diltiazem is sometimes used in transplantology, to prevent graft failure after kidney transplantation, and also during immunosuppressive therapy to reduce the nephrotoxicity of cyclosporine A.

Side effects and contraindications

Like any medicine, Diltiazem may cause unwanted side effects. These may include headache, dizziness, weakness, feeling of fatigue, peripheral edema, impaired potency, dyspeptic symptoms, hyperplasia of the gum mucosa, sweating, redness of the skin, allergic reactions and increased transaminase activity.

Contraindications to the use of Diltiazem hydrochloride include hypersensitivity, cardiogenic shock, left ventricular systolic dysfunction, sinus bradycardia, sick sinus syndrome, sinoatrial and AV block II-III degree, severe aortic stenosis, Wolff-Parconson-White syndrome and Lown-Ganong syndrome. Levin with paroxysms of atrial fibrillation or flutter, impaired liver and kidney function, as well as the simultaneous use of certain other drugs, such as amidarone, beta-blockers, antidepressants of the serotonin reuptake inhibitor group and others.
