Dostinex is a drug that contains cabergoline as an active substance and is used to treat hyperprolactinemia, prevent or suppress lactation, as well as to treat menstrual disorders, infertility, galactorrhea, libido disorders and impotence in men, as well as to treat acromegaly.

The producers of Dostinex are the Italian companies Pharmacia and Upjohn. The dosage form of the drug is tablets containing 0.5 mg of cabergoline.

Despite the effectiveness of Dostinex in the treatment of various diseases, it also has a number of side effects and contraindications. Restrictions on use include hypersensitivity to cabergoline, postpartum psychosis, pregnancy and lactation.

Side effects of Dostinex include weakness, orthostatic hypotension, nausea, dry mouth, constipation, nasal congestion, paleness of fingers and toes when exposed to cold, and allergic skin reactions. In case of overdose, serious symptoms may occur, such as headache, general weakness, sweating, drowsiness, confusion, psychomotor agitation, hallucinations, hypotension, cramps in the calf muscles, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, constipation.

In addition, Dostinex may interact with other medications, such as macrolides and antipsychotics, as well as alcohol, which may affect its effectiveness and tolerability.

When using Dostinex, it is also necessary to take into account the possible health characteristics of the patient. For example, the drug is not recommended for arterial hypertension, severe cardiovascular diseases, Raynaud's disease, peptic ulcer of the stomach and duodenum, insufficiency of kidney and liver function, and severe mental illness. Gynecological examination and monitoring of serum prolactin levels are also recommended. During the treatment period, monitoring of blood pressure and gastrointestinal functions is necessary, as well as avoidance of alcohol intake. In the first days of therapy, increased caution is required when driving vehicles and working with machines and mechanisms.
