Droxil: application, action, side effects

Droxil (international name - cefadroxil) is an antibiotic belonging to the group of first-generation cephalosporins. The drug is manufactured by United Pharmaceutical Manufacturing Co Ltd in Jordan. Droxil is available as 500 mg capsules and 250 mg powder for oral suspension.

Application

Droxil is used to treat infectious diseases of the skin and soft tissues, genitourinary organs, tonsillitis and pharyngitis. The drug works by destroying bacterial cells, blocking the process of cell wall synthesis and killing the bacteria.

Droxil may be effective in treating bacterial infections caused by susceptible microorganisms, but is not effective in treating viral infections.

Contraindications and side effects

Despite the fact that Droxil is a safe and effective drug, it has a number of contraindications and side effects.

Contraindications include hypersensitivity to cephalosporins, pregnancy and breastfeeding.

Side effects may include dyspeptic symptoms, nausea, vomiting, impaired renal function, hypovitaminosis, dysbacteriosis, candidiasis, pseudomembranous colitis, allergic reactions: skin rashes, Quincke's edema, anaphylactic shock.

Interaction

Droxil may interact with other drugs. The effect is enhanced by bactericidal antibacterial agents, and weakened by bacteriostatic ones. When used simultaneously with polymyxins and aminoglycosides, an increase in the nephrotoxicity of these drugs may be observed.

It is not recommended to drink alcohol during treatment with Droxil. The drug should be used with caution in case of impaired renal function or a history of colitis. The dissolved powder can be stored for 7 days at room temperature and 14 days in the refrigerator.
