The drug Durophilin, also known by the international name Theophylline, is a representative of the group of bronchodilators - phosphodiesterase inhibitors. It is produced by the Zdravlje company in Yugoslavia and is presented in the form of retard capsules 125 mg and 250 mg.
Durophilin is used to treat bronchial asthma, status asthmaticus, obstructive bronchitis, emphysema, and also as an adjuvant for apnea in newborns. Theophylline is the active substance of the drug.
There are contraindications to the use of Durophilin, such as hypersensitivity to the drug or other xanthine derivatives, hemorrhagic stroke, retinal hemorrhage, acute myocardial infarction, a recent history of bleeding, severe atherosclerosis of the coronary arteries, pregnancy and breastfeeding. When treating with retard forms of the drug, it is necessary to periodically monitor the concentration of Theophylline in the blood, which should not exceed 20 mcg/ml.
When using Durophilin, side effects may occur, including anxiety, impaired consciousness, convulsions, visual disturbances, angina attacks, arrhythmias, tachycardia, hypotension, laryngitis, sore throat, flu-like syndrome, nasal congestion, xerostomia, anorexia, nausea, vomiting, heartburn, exacerbation of cholecystitis, cholestatic hepatitis, increased concentrations of liver enzymes, intestinal atony, leukopenia, hypofibrinogenemia, pancytopenia and allergic reactions.
When interacting with certain drugs, a change in the effectiveness of Durophilin may be observed. For example, cimetidine, allopurinol, cyclosporine A, macrolide antibiotics, oral contraceptives, and influenza serum may reduce drug clearance and increase the risk of adverse events. Phenobarbital, phenytoin, xanthines and smoking, on the contrary, accelerate the biotransformation of Durophilin. Beta-blockers may reduce the bronchodilator activity of the drug. Adsorbents, enveloping agents, antacids, oxidizing agents can slow down the absorption of the drug and reduce its maximum concentration; acorticosteroids can enhance its effect.
Before starting to use Durophilin, you must consult your doctor and inform him about all existing diseases, medications taken and allergic reactions. It is also important to strictly follow dosage recommendations and not exceed the recommended duration of treatment.
If side effects occur when using Durophilin, you must immediately stop using it and seek medical help.
