Esophagoscopy

Esophagoscopy is one of the most common methods for examining the gastrointestinal tract, which allows you to assess the condition of the mucous membrane of the esophagus and stomach and identify various diseases. Esophagoscopy is performed using a special device with a camera and lighting, which is inserted into the esophagus through the mouth or nose. The study can be carried out either with or without anesthesia, depending on the degree of its complexity.

In most cases, you can prepare for the esophagoscopy procedure in advance. It does not require a special diet before the procedure, but in order for the procedure to be as accurate as possible, there are no obstacles, I would recommend, a few days before the procedure, to exclude from your diet foods that can cause digestive disorders and reduce food intake throughout the day to 2 -3 times a day.

Esophaloscopy may also cause some discomfort, so it is worth going for the procedure when you are strong and willing, as you may feel the need to relax and hold back during the procedure.

In some patients, esophaloscopy may cause some side effects, such as increased salivation, which may interfere with a clear image on the video screen. In this case, this may be caused by individual intolerance to the local anesthetic drug, which causes swallowing and, accordingly, an increase in the volume of saliva. In order to avoid unpleasant side effects, it is worth dissuading the patient from performing reflex actions and advising him to refrain from eating and drinking immediately before the procedure. Be sure to tell the patient about what we can see during the Esophaloscope in live broadcast mode - this will help him feel more confident and not be afraid of what he sees. Remember that your correct and clear explanations can help remove all fears from your patient already during the preliminary stage of your work. The best thing is to show the patient some videos of such studies.

What is an esophagus and why do we want to look at its cavity?

The esophagus is a muscular tube that connects the oral and esophageal cavities. The esophagus plays an important role in the digestive process: it facilitates the movement of food from the mouth to the stomach and protects against damage and infections of the esophagus. However, sometimes problems may arise in the operation of the esophagus, which can be detected by diagnostics using the esophagus method.

Esophagoscope

***Esophagoscope*** is a special device for studying the inner surface of the esophagus and its mucous membrane. The device looks like a thin flexible tube through which air is supplied. In the head part there is a mouth to which the light source is connected. The esophagoscope is inserted through the mouth or through the skin above the entrance to the esophagus. During the examination, the doctor inserts an endoscope into the esophagus through the nose or mouth, while the patient is usually sitting. If necessary, local anesthesia is used. The doctor can circle any suspicious areas through a video camera using an optical fiber cable. Under the influence of air, the surrounding tissues part, and their boundaries are clearly visible. At the same time, inflammation is removed. At the end of the endoscopy procedure
