Ferronate

Ferronate: an effective drug for the treatment of iron deficiency conditions

Ferronate, also known as ferrous fumarate, is a pharmaceutical drug developed to treat various iron deficiency conditions. It belongs to the group of preparations containing iron and is produced by Galena AS in the Czech Republic.

The drug Ferronate is presented in the form of a suspension for internal use, containing 3 g of the active substance - iron fumarate. It is widely used for the treatment and prevention of iron deficiency anemia, which can occur as a result of various causes, such as posthemorrhagic menorrhagia (heavy monthly bleeding), chronic blood loss in the gastrointestinal tract and others. The drug is also used when there is an increased need for iron, for example, during pregnancy, lactation, periods of intensive growth and puberty, especially in girls. It can also be prescribed in case of insufficient intake of iron from food or disturbances in its absorption, for example, with chronic diarrhea or helminthic infestation. In addition, Ferronate can be used as a trial treatment for iron deficiency anemia in the elderly and senile.

However, there are certain contraindications to the use of Ferronate. It is not recommended for hemolytic anemia not associated with iron deficiency, hemochromatosis, gastric and duodenal ulcers in the acute phase, as well as inflammatory bowel diseases such as Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis.

Side effects that may occur when using Ferronate include anorexia, metallic taste in the mouth, nausea, vomiting, constipation and diarrhea. It is also important to consider the interactions of this drug with other medications. For example, Ferronate may interfere with the absorption of tetracycline antibiotics, and use of the drug together with antacids, such as Almagel, or magnesium salts may reduce its absorption from the intestine.

In case of an overdose of Ferronate, various symptoms may occur, including nausea, epigastric pain, vomiting of blood, diarrhea, dizziness, weakness, confusion, acrocyanosis, low blood pressure and weak pulse. In such cases, you should immediately seek medical help.

It is important to note that the information provided is based on my knowledge prior to September 2021. It is recommended to consult a medical specialist or pharmacist for more up-to-date information about the use of Ferronate, its dosage, side effects and contraindications.
