Funicular

Funicular - see Funicular.

Funicular (from Latin funis - rope, rope) is a type of rail transport for lifting and lowering passengers along the steep slopes of mountains and hills. It is a cable car or rail track with trolleys attached to a rope and driven by a winch.

Funiculars are often used to reach residential areas on hillsides, as well as castles, monasteries and other sites at higher elevations. Compared to the physically expensive ascent on foot, the funicular provides easy and quick access to such objects.

The first funicular was built in Lyon (France) in 1862. Since then, funiculars have become widespread in European cities, especially in Austria, Switzerland, and Italy.

Thus, a funiculo is the colloquial name for a funicular, a cable car or a railway for lifting passengers in mountainous areas.
