Geopen

Geopen: penicillin antibiotic from Macedonia

Geopen is a penicillin antibiotic produced in Macedonia by Alkaloid and in Belgium by Pfizer. The international name of the drug is carbenicillin, and its synonym is carbenicillin disodium salt. Geopen is available in injection and tablet dosage forms, including dosages of 1.5 g and 500 mg.

Geopen is used to treat a variety of infections, including infections of the genitourinary organs, urinary and biliary tract, peritonitis, sepsis, pneumonia, infectious and inflammatory diseases of the skin and soft tissues, meningitis, brain abscess and otitis media.

Despite the effectiveness of the drug, it has a number of contraindications and side effects that must be taken into account when prescribing. Geopen should not be used in case of hypersensitivity to beta-lactam antibiotics, bronchial asthma, eczema, angioedema, increased bleeding, ulcerative colitis, enteritis, infectious mononucleosis and impaired renal function.

Side effects may include dyspeptic symptoms (nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain), increased bleeding, interstitial nephritis, epileptiform seizures, neutropenia, pseudomembranous colitis, dysbacteriosis, candidiasis, hypovitaminosis, exacerbation reaction, allergic reactions (skin rashes and itching, fever, serum illness, angioedema, anaphylactic shock) and hyperemia and pain at the injection site.

You should also consider possible interactions of the drug with other medications. Geopen can enhance the effects of direct and indirect anticoagulants, antiplatelet agents and fibrinolytics. When combined with NSAIDs, the likelihood of side effects may increase. The bactericidal effect can be neutralized when combined with bacteriostatics (tetracycline antibiotics, macrolides, chloramphenicol), and the activity of aminoglycosides can be reduced.

Before parenteral use of Geopen, an intravenous test for individual sensitivity with 0.1 ml of the drug must be performed. The test results are assessed after 30 minutes. The drug should be prescribed with caution if there is a history of allergic reactions to antibiotics, as well as with impaired renal and liver function.

Overall, Geopen is an effective antibiotic for treating various infections. However, like any other drug, it has contraindications and side effects, so it should be prescribed only after a thorough examination of the medical history and assessment of the patient's condition. It is also important to follow the dosage and regimen, and if adverse reactions occur, seek medical help in a timely manner.
