Gleevec: use, contraindications and side effects

Gleevec (imatinib) is a synthetic anticancer drug manufactured by Novartis Pharma AG in Switzerland. It is used to treat several types of cancer, including chronic myeloid leukemia and inoperable malignant gastrointestinal stromal tumors in adult patients.

Gleevec is available in the form of 100 mg capsules containing the active ingredient imatinib. The drug is contraindicated in case of hypersensitivity to the components of the drug. It is also not recommended to use Gleevec during pregnancy, unless essential, or while breastfeeding, as it is not known whether imatinib is excreted in breast milk.

Like any medicine, Gleevec may cause side effects. Some of the most common side effects include infectious diseases such as sepsis, pneumonia and gastroenteritis, and hematopoietic disorders such as neutropenia, thrombocytopenia and anemia. In addition, metabolic disorders such as anorexia, dehydration, hyperuricemia, hypokalemia, hyperkalemia and hyponatremia, as well as central nervous system disorders such as headache, dizziness and insomnia, are possible.

However, it should be noted that most side effects of Gleevec are usually mild or moderate and go away when you stop taking the drug. If you notice any side effects while taking Gleevec, be sure to tell your doctor.

Overall, Gleevec is an effective drug for treating certain types of cancer. However, before starting treatment, you should discuss all indications and contraindications, as well as possible side effects, with your doctor. Only in this way can you make the right decision about whether Gleevec is suitable for your individual case.
