Gentiana lutea L.
At an altitude of 1200 to 2000 m above sea level, in the subalpine meadows of the Carpathians, a perennial herbaceous plant grows yellow gentian. The name is not accidental. The flowers are bright yellow, and the medicinal roots have a bitter taste due to the presence of the glycoside gentiopecrin. Until about 3 years of age, the plant forms a rosette of leaves, and only by 3-4 years does a round, hollow inside stem grow up to 1.5 m in height. The root and rhizomes of gentian have long been used for medicinal purposes. They dug them up when the stem began to wither. But it was not a simple matter - they were sitting too deep in the ground. Despite the bitter taste, the roots and rhizomes of gentian have a very pleasant slightly balsamic honey aroma, due to the presence of essential oil. Yellow gentian is a rather rare plant. To protect it from destruction, raw materials are not harvested under natural conditions. The plant has acclimatized well in central Russia, where it is cultivated as a medicinal and essential oil plant. From 200 kg of raw materials you can get 1 kg of essential oil.
Gentian is included in the pharmacopoeias of many countries around the world. Once upon a time, it was used to treat plague, pulmonary tuberculosis, and malaria. They prepared a drug that promotes active longevity. Gentian roots were added to beer to give it a special velvety taste. To this day, the roots and essential oil of Gentian yellow are used in the production of alcoholic beverages. Unfortunately, gentian oil is rarely used in aromatherapy, since it is produced in small quantities.
