Cheilitis Interstitial Tuberculous

Interstitial tuberculous cheilitis is a chronic inflammatory disease of the red border of the lips caused by tuberculosis infection.

Causes

The causative agent of the disease is Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Infection occurs through contact with a person with tuberculosis or through household items. People with weakened immune systems are more likely to get sick.

Symptoms

Main symptoms:

  1. Redness and swelling of the red border of the lips
  2. Small cracks and ulcers on the lips
  3. Peeling and itching of the skin
  4. Pain when talking and eating

Diagnostics

The diagnosis is made based on the clinical picture and laboratory results:

  1. Analysis of a smear from the mucous membrane of the lips for Mycobacterium tuberculosis
  2. Tuberculin test
  3. Biopsy of affected tissue

Treatment

Treatment is complex and includes anti-tuberculosis drugs and local treatment of the lips. Full recovery occurs after a course of anti-tuberculosis therapy. It is important to follow all doctor's recommendations to prevent infection of others.

The prognosis with timely treatment is favorable. The disease leaves no consequences. Relapses are possible with improper or incomplete treatment.

Prevention consists of following the rules of personal hygiene, especially when in contact with sick people, and strengthening the immune system.
