The Hippocratic murmur (sussus hiposatra), or splash, is a sound similar to a hissing bite (sh-s), produced in the same way as a heart murmur. Hippocrates called it “succus Hippocratis”, which means “noisy waters”. Hippocrates described it as a certain sound that is heard when inhaling, this sound is especially pronounced when the position of the body changes.
