Ichthyol: properties, uses and side effects

Ichthyol, also known as ichthammol, is the active ingredient in various dosage forms, including suppositories, ointments and substances. It is produced by several companies in Russia, including Dalkhimfarm, Medkhim, Nizhpharm, Syzran Slate Processing Plant and Khabarovsk Chemical Plant.

Ichthyol belongs to the group of tars, resins and oils that are obtained from petroleum products. It is also a sulfur containing product. Ichthyol has an international name - ichthammol, as well as several synonyms, including ichthyol solution in glycerin, ichthyol ointment and ichthyol ointment 10%.

Ichthyol is used to treat various skin diseases, including burns, erysipelas, eczema and others. It can also be used to treat pain caused by neuralgia and arthritis. In addition, ichthyol is used to treat inflammatory diseases of the pelvic organs, such as prostatitis, metritis, parametritis and salpingitis.

Ichthyol contains the active substance - ichthammol. Contraindications to the use of ichthyol include hypersensitivity to the active substance. Side effects may include allergic reactions. Interaction of ichthyol with other medications is not recommended; in particular, it is incompatible with iodide salts, alkaloids and heavy metal salts.

There is no information on overdose and special instructions. Ichthyol is available in various dosage forms, including 200 mg suppositories, 500 g and 1 kg substances, and 200 mg rectal suppositories.
