Indocid: use, side effects and special instructions

Indocid (indomethacin) is a drug from the group of anti-inflammatory drugs, a derivative of indoleacetic acid. It is used to treat various diseases of the musculoskeletal system, such as rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, osteoarthritis, tendinitis, synovitis, acute gouty arthritis, reactive arthritis.

Indocide is manufactured by Merck Sharp and Dohme in the Netherlands and is available in the market under various trade names such as Apo-Indomethacin, Vero-Indomitacin, Indobene, Indovis ES, Indocollir, Indomet-Ratiopharm, Indomethacin, Indomethacin (Movimed), Indomethacin 100 Berlin-Chemie, Indomethacin 50 Berlin-Chemie, Indomethacin Vramed, Indomethacin Sevtopolis, Indomethacin Sopharma and Indomet.

Indocid is presented in the form of an ophthalmic suspension of 1% and contains the active substance - indomethacin. However, like any other medicine, Indocid has a list of contraindications and side effects.

Contraindications include hypersensitivity to the drug, rhinitis, conjunctivitis or bronchospasm while taking NSAIDs, erosive and ulcerative lesions of the gastrointestinal tract, bleeding (especially intracranial or from the gastrointestinal tract), thrombocytopenia, hypocoagulation, suspected necrotizing enterocolitis, severe renal failure, congenital heart defects (tetralogy of Fallot , pulmonary atresia), proctitis (suppositories) and pregnancy (teratogenicity may occur).

Side effects that may occur when using Indocid include nausea, vomiting, epigastric pain, erosive and ulcerative lesions of the gastrointestinal tract, gastrointestinal bleeding, rectal bleeding, toxic hepatitis, constipation, arterial hypertension, cardiac arrhythmias, bone marrow hypoplasia, aplastic anemia, autoimmune hemolytic anemia, agranulocytosis, thrombocytopenia, platelet dysfunction, fluid retention, hyperglycemia, glycosuria, hyperkalemia, pruritus, urticaria, exfoliative dermatitis, hair loss, visual impairment, chest pain and others.

When using Indocid, special instructions must be followed. For example, it is important to avoid concomitant use of alcohol, as this may increase the risk of developing gastrointestinal side effects. It is also not recommended to use Indocid simultaneously with other NSAIDs, as this may increase the risk of side effects.

Taking Indocid may affect the results of some laboratory tests, such as blood glucose levels or liver function tests. Therefore, before conducting such studies, you must inform your doctor about taking Indocid.

Indocid is not recommended for use in children under 14 years of age, since the effectiveness and safety of the drug in this age group have not been established. It is also necessary to be careful when prescribing Indocid to elderly patients, as they have an increased risk of developing side effects.
