Iodostin: an effective product containing iodine
Iodostin is a pharmaceutical preparation containing potassium iodide and is used in various fields of medicine. It is produced in Poland by Polpharma Pharmaceutical Plant SA and belongs to the group of products containing iodine. This drug is widely used for the prevention and treatment of diseases associated with iodine deficiency.
The main active ingredient of iodostin is potassium iodide. It is available in the form of film-coated tablets containing 0.1 mg of active substance. The drug is effectively used to prevent diseases associated with iodine deficiency in the environment, especially in children, adolescents, pregnant and lactating women. Iodostin is also used to treat diffuse non-toxic and euthyroid goiter caused by iodine deficiency in children, adolescents and adults.
Before you start using iodostin, you need to consider some contraindications. The drug is not recommended for increased thyroid function, hypersensitivity to iodine, as well as toxic thyroid adenoma and nodular goiter. You should also be careful with Dühring's dermatitis herpetiformis.
Side effects from the use of iodostin are usually rare, especially when used prophylactically at any age and in the treatment of goiter in children and adolescents. In some cases, “iodism” may occur, manifested by a metallic taste in the mouth, swelling and inflammation of the mucous membranes, “iodine fever” and “iodine acne.” Very rarely, angioedema and exfoliative dermatitis may develop. If the dosage of the drug is exceeded, various problems with the thyroid gland may also occur.
Interaction of iodostin with other drugs can lead to an increase or decrease in their effect, as well as to the development of side effects. Therefore, it is important to tell your doctor about all the medications you are taking, including medications for depression, potassium-sparing diuretics, and medications that affect the production of thyroid hormones.
There are no data on cases of iodostin overdose, however, it is necessary to observe the indicated dosage and follow the doctor's instructions.
