Tumor cachexia (s. tumorosa; synonym for cancer) is a wasting syndrome that develops in cancer patients as a result of the tumor process.
Characterized by loss of muscle and fat tissue, which leads to sudden weight loss. In addition, there is general weakness, fatigue and decreased physical activity.
The causes of tumor cachexia are metabolic disorders under the influence of tumor factors, decreased appetite, nausea, vomiting, and impaired absorption of nutrients.
For diagnosis, anthropometric indicators (body mass index, percentage of body weight loss) and biochemical tests are used.
Treatment is aimed at combating the underlying disease, correcting metabolic disorders, nutritional support, and symptomatic therapy.
