Ketocef: Description, use, side effects and contraindications

Ketocef is a second-generation cephalosporin antibiotic that is used to treat various infections. The drug is manufactured by Pliva in Croatia and is sold under many trade and international names, such as Axetin, Zinacef, Zinnat, Kefstar, Kefurox, Multisef, Novocef, Proxim, Supero, Ucefaxim, Cefogen, Cefuxime, Cefurabol, Cefuroxime sodium.

The drug is presented in powder form for the preparation of an injection solution, as well as in the form of a powder for the preparation of an injection solution with a dosage of 750 mg. The active substance is cefuroxime.

Ketocef is used to treat various infections, such as respiratory tract infections (bronchitis, pneumonia, lung abscess), ear, nose and throat infections (otitis, pharyngitis, tonsillitis, sinusitis), skin and soft tissue infections (erysipelas, cellulitis, pyoderma, impetigo , furunculosis), genitourinary tract infections (urethritis, pyelonephritis, cystitis), infections of the joints, pelvic and abdominal organs, biliary tract and gastrointestinal tract, as well as for the prevention of infectious complications during operations.

Like any other antibiotic, ketocef can cause side effects. These effects may include diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, constipation, flatulence, abdominal cramps and pain, dyspepsia, oral ulcers, oral thrush, glossitis, pseudomembranous colitis, liver and kidney dysfunction, allergic reactions, and others.

Ketocef also has a number of contraindications. It should not be used in case of hypersensitivity to other cephalosporins, penicillins, carbapenems, with a history of bleeding and gastrointestinal diseases, including ulcerative colitis, as well as during pregnancy and lactation.

Ketocef may also interact with other medicines such as diuretics and nephrotoxic antibiotics, NSAIDs, probenecid and drugs that reduce stomach acid.

In case of overdose of Ketocef, symptoms such as central nervous system stimulation and seizures may occur.

In any case of using Ketocef, you must follow the instructions for use and consult your doctor. The course of treatment must be completed completely, even if the symptoms of the infection have disappeared earlier. Violation of the rules for using antibiotics can lead to the development of bacterial resistance to this drug and a deterioration in the patient’s condition.
