Ketotifen-Rivopharm: antiallergic drug from Switzerland

Ketotifen-Rivopharm is a drug from the group of antiallergic drugs produced by the Swiss company Rivopharm SA. The active substance is ketotifen fumarate. The drug is available in the form of 1 mg tablets and 1 mg/5 ml syrup.

Indications for use of Ketotifen-Rivopharm include the prevention of attacks of bronchial asthma, allergic bronchitis, hay fever, as well as the prevention and treatment of allergic rhinitis, allergic conjunctivitis, urticaria, atopic dermatitis and migraine.

Like other drugs from the group of antihistamines, Ketotifen-Rivopharm has certain contraindications. The drug is not recommended for people with hypersensitivity to its components, as well as for pregnant women and nursing mothers. Children under 3 years of age are not recommended to take tablets, and children under 6 months should not take syrup.

When using Ketotifen-Rivopharm, side effects may occur. From the nervous system and sensory organs, sedation, lethargy, feeling of fatigue, slight dizziness, headache, drowsiness, anxiety, sleep disturbance and nervousness may be observed, especially in children. From the gastrointestinal tract, dry mouth, increased appetite, nausea, vomiting, gastralgia and constipation may occur. Allergic skin reactions and weight gain are also possible.

When using Ketotifen-Rivopharm, it is necessary to take into account possible interactions with other drugs. The drug enhances the effects of sedatives, hypnotics, other antihistamines and ethanol. Oral antidiabetic drugs increase the likelihood of thrombocytopenia.

In case of an overdose of Ketotifen-Rivopharm, drowsiness, confusion, disorientation, bradycardia and tachycardia, hypotension, shortness of breath, increased excitability, and in rare cases, the development of coma may occur. Treatment of overdose includes gastric lavage, activated charcoal, saline laxatives and symptomatic therapy.

It should be borne in mind that Ketotifen-Rivopharm is not intended to relieve an attack of bronchial asthma. For this purpose, it is necessary to use fast-acting bronchodilators.

Before starting to use Ketotifen-Rivopharm, you must consult your doctor and strictly follow the recommendations on dosage and duration of treatment. The drug should be stored out of the reach of children at a temperature not exceeding 25 °C. The shelf life of tablets is 3 years, syrup – 2 years. After the expiration date, the drug should be disposed of.

In general, Ketotifen-Rivopharm is an effective antiallergic drug, but its use must be justified and supervised by a physician to avoid possible side effects.
