A non-war sebaceous cyst (cysta neoviroidia sebacea, previously the terms hydatidial sebaceous stone and hydatidis were used) is a small (less than 1 cm in diameter) tumor-like formation of an indeterminate shape, often red-brown in color, and sometimes brown in color. The cyst invariably contains a jelly-like liquid content. From the upper sections it can hang down or sink into the depths of the excretory duct, lined with a spiral-shaped, elongated epithelium. Tumors can be located either superficially or deep in the tissue, closer to the hair follicle, which may be covered by a sebaceous lens. In the early stages, the cyst is benign, but malignancy and recurrence can occur.
The cyst can be successfully treated by aspiration of the contents, removal of the entire stone, or surgery.
