THYROID CELLS

The cells of the thyroid islets are tyropic. This designates the cells that produce the thyroid hormone - thyroxine (tetraiodothyronine), the main function of which is to enhance metabolism in all tissues involved in heat exchange. Such cells are designated by the formula AT*TSH. The name of these cells comes from the Greek word "tyro" - calf. Indeed, in appearance, the thyroid follicles resemble calf nipples. The word “thyroid” appeared among ancient scientists from the Latin scrotum - scrotum. Due to the presence of thyroid follicles and goiter, this name seemed more logical to them.
