Definition. Psychogenic contracture is a mental disorder characterized by painful contraction or rigidity of muscles due to excessive tension and manifested by the inability to voluntarily relax tense muscle groups, a feeling of mechanical obstruction that develops despite complete relaxation of the muscles (see Appendix A).
