Hematopoiesis

Hematopoiesis is the process of formation of new blood cells in the human body. It occurs in the bone marrow, which is part of the central nervous system and is found in the bones of the skull, sternum, vertebrae and ribs. This process begins in the early stages of embryonic development and continues until the person’s death.

Hematopoiesis includes two main stages: myelopoiesis and lymphopoiesis. Myelopoiesis gives rise to most of the formed elements of blood - erythrocytes, leukocytes and platelets. Lymphopoiesis is responsible for the formation of lymphocyte cells, which play an important role in the immune system.
