Questran

Questran: a drug to lower cholesterol and prevent atherosclerosis

Questran is a drug that belongs to a group of lipid-lowering drugs known as bile acid sequestrants. It was developed by the pharmaceutical company Bristol-Myers Squibb and is available in several countries around the world, including France, Italy and the UK.

The main active ingredient of Questran, cholestyramine, helps reduce cholesterol levels in the blood by binding bile acids in the intestines and removing them from the body through the intestines. Questran is used for the treatment of primary hypercholesterolemia (increased LDL levels) and the prevention of atherosclerosis and its complications, including coronary heart disease and myocardial infarction. It can also be used to treat itching due to partial bile duct obstruction.

However, like other medications, Questran has contraindications and side effects. Contraindications to use include hypersensitivity, complete biliary obstruction, phenylketonuria and pregnancy (and suspected pregnancy). In addition, side effects may occur during treatment with Questran, such as constipation, pain and discomfort in the abdomen, increased gas formation in the intestines, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, heartburn, anorexia, dyspepsia, pancreatitis, steatorrhea, skin irritation, skin rashes, increased libido. With prolonged treatment, more serious side effects may occur, such as hyperchloremic acidosis, decreased blood clotting, hemorrhoidal bleeding, bleeding from gastric and duodenal ulcers.

Interactions between Questran and other medications can also be a problem. It may reduce the absorption of phenylbutazone, warfarin, chlorothiazide, tetracycline, penicillin G, phenobarbital, thyroxine and digitalis. Therefore, it is recommended to take these drugs 4-6 hours after taking Questran.

Due to the risk of gastrointestinal obstruction with an overdose of Questran, it is important to follow the recommended doses and not exceed them. Periodic monitoring of the levels of triglycerides, cholesterol and prothrombin in the blood during treatment is also necessary. It is important to drink enough fluids while taking Questran to prevent the formation of gallstones.

Questran is a serious drug that can be effective in treating high cholesterol and preventing atherosclerosis. However, it also has contraindications and side effects, so it should be taken only as prescribed by a doctor and under his supervision. If you have any questions or concerns about using Questran, be sure to consult your doctor.
