Lariam: an effective antimalarial drug

Lariam, also known by its international name Mefloquine, is an antimalarial drug manufactured in Switzerland by the Hoffmann-La Roche company. This drug is a tablet containing 250 mg of the active substance - Mefloquine. Lariam is widely used in the treatment and prevention of malaria caused by various strains of Plasmodium falciparum, as well as malaria caused by Plasmodium vivax, Plasmodium ovale and Plasmodium malariae.

The main indications for the use of Lariam include the treatment of mild and moderate forms of malaria, prevention of malaria before traveling to regions with a high risk of infection, as well as emergency treatment when malaria is suspected and it is impossible to seek urgent medical help.

However, it should be noted that Lariam has some contraindications and restrictions for use. The drug is not recommended for hypersensitivity to Mefloquine, epileptic and other convulsive seizures, as well as acute psychosis. Restrictions on the use of Lariam also include pregnancy, the presence of mental illness, severe liver dysfunction, as well as age under 2 years or body weight up to 15 kg.

There may be some side effects when using Lariam. In prophylactic doses, the drug can cause transient gastrointestinal disorders, headache, dizziness, fainting, extrasystole, as well as changes in laboratory parameters and neuropsychiatric disorders. When using therapeutic doses, severe dyspeptic symptoms, fatigue, neuropsychiatric disorders, changes in blood pressure and heart rate, skin reactions and other side effects may occur.

It is important to note that Lariam may interact with other drugs. For example, it may enhance the inhibition of cardiac conduction and excitability caused by some other drugs. Lariam may also reduce the antiepileptic activity of some drugs and increase the risk of seizures when used simultaneously with chloroquine or quinine.

In case of Lariam overdose, symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, dizziness, abdominal pain, seizures and heart problems may occur. In such cases, it is necessary to seek medical help.

Overall, Lariam is an effective antimalarial drug, but its use must be under medical supervision. Before starting to take Lariam, you should consult with a medical specialist who will evaluate the indications and contraindications, and also tell you about possible side effects and interactions with other medications.
