Lavasept concentrate: properties, use and contraindications
Lavasept concentrate is an antiseptic product produced in Germany by Fresenius AG. The international name of the drug is Polyhexanide, and the synonym is the name Lavasept. The dosage form of Lavasept is a solution, 1 ml of which contains 200 mg of Polyhexanide and 10 mg of Macrogol 4000.
Lavasept concentrate is used for the treatment of acute and chronic infections of soft tissues and bones, as well as for the prevention of infections during surgical interventions. The use of Lavasept includes preparatory rinsing of the lesion with an antiseptic solution before operations, irrigation of the surgical field with an antiseptic solution during reconstructive interventions, repeated subcutaneous rinsing with an antiseptic solution for infection of total hip joint endoprostheses, dressing wounds left partially or completely open after surgery, as well as washing foci of infection in dentistry and maxillofacial surgery.
Lavasept concentrate is contraindicated in case of hypersensitivity to the components of the drug, during operations on uninfected joints, in any area of the central nervous system, meninges, spinal cord, during operations on the middle and inner ear, on the eyes, for intraperitoneal lavage , in case of retention of the drug in the tissues of the body and in the first 4 months of pregnancy. Use of the drug later in pregnancy must be justified by the perceived benefits. During lactation, Lavasept can be used only according to strict indications.
When using Lavasept, there may be a risk of cartilage damage and the appearance of exanthema in case of individual intolerance to the components of the drug. The simultaneous use of Lavasept with iodine preparations is undesirable to avoid the development of dermatitis. No other cases of interaction have been identified to date.
Only one case of Lavasept overdose has been described - after washing the infected hip joint with an insufficient amount of solution.
