Luer lock is a type of rubber outlet clamp (probe) for an IV. Named after the French urological surgeon Edouard Luer (French: Lhuillier). Clinical trials were completed in 2008.
The clamp is intended for use in clinics (see clinic) during various medical procedures involving the insertion of a medical needle into a vessel or internal tissues of the body, as well as to stop bleeding from a wound. It is used to disconnect the catheter from the IV or drainage after its use, which avoids contamination of the vessel connection site and helps to avoid complications during subsequent procedures when taking a biopsy. It is also used as an adapter when connecting one dropper to two oxygen lines.
