Maprotibene

Maprotibene: an effective antidepressant from Austria

Maprotibene, also known by its international name maprotiline, is an antidepressant belonging to the group of non-selective neuronal uptake inhibitors. This drug is manufactured in Austria by Merkle GmbH and is widely used to treat various forms of depression and related conditions.

Maprotibene is available in dosage forms, including film-coated tablets of different dosages: 25 mg, 50 mg and 75 mg. The active substance of the drug is maprotiline.

This antidepressant is effective in the treatment of various types of depression, including endogenous, involutional, psychogenic, reactive and neurotic depression. It is also used to treat exhaustion depression, somatogenic depression (associated with physical illness), depression associated with menopause, as well as to relieve depressed mood with elements of anxiety, dysphoria or irritability. Maprotibene can be prescribed to patients with psychosomatic and somatic disorders caused by depression and fear.

However, there are some contraindications to the use of maprotibene. It is not recommended for hypersensitivity to the drug, epilepsy, conditions characterized by increased convulsive activity, acute myocardial infarction, angle-closure glaucoma, prostate adenoma, acute alcohol intoxication and during lactation. The use of maprotibene in pregnant women is possible only in cases where the benefit to the mother outweighs the potential risk to the fetus, and careful medical monitoring is required.

During treatment with maprotibene, some side effects may occur. These may include dry mouth, constipation, urinary retention, accommodation problems (the ability of the eye to focus), orthostatic hypotension (low blood pressure when you change body position), muscle weakness, fatigue, drowsiness or insomnia, tachycardia, blood pressure fluctuations and allergic reactions. .

Maprotibene may also interact with other drugs. It may reduce the effect of antihypertensive drugs (drugs that lower blood pressure), anticholinergic drugs (drugs that block the action of acetylcholine), antihistamines (anti-allergy drugs), and alcohol. Serious side effects may occur when used concomitantly with monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs), so their combination should be avoided.

It is important to note that the information I have provided is based on the knowledge available to me prior to September 2021. It is possible that new data or recommendations regarding the use of maprotibene have become available since then. Therefore, it is recommended that you consult a qualified healthcare professional or pharmacist for current information and recommendations regarding the use of this drug.
