Melanonychia

Melanonychia is a condition in which dark spots or streaks appear on the nails due to changes in pigmentation. This can be caused by various reasons such as genetic factors, hormonal changes, exposure to chemicals or diseases such as diabetes or psoriasis.

Symptoms of melanonychia may include changes in nail color, streaks, spots or dots on the nail plate, and nail breakdown. Some people may also experience discomfort or pain in the nail area.

To diagnose melanonychia, a visual examination of the nails and the skin around them is usually performed. If other conditions are suspected, additional tests such as blood tests or a biopsy may be ordered.

Treatment for melanonychia depends on the cause of its occurrence. For example, if it is associated with diseases, then treatment of the underlying disease is necessary. If it is caused by other factors, topical treatments such as creams or ointments can be used to help reduce pigmentation.

In general, melanonychia is not a dangerous disease, but it can cause discomfort and deterioration in the appearance of the nails. Therefore, it is important to see a doctor if symptoms of this condition appear.
