Meningoencephalitis Amebic

Amoebic meningoencephalitis (m.amoebica) is an infectious disease caused by amoebas of the species Naegleria fowleri. These amoebas live in fresh water and can enter the human body by inhaling water containing their spores.

Symptoms of amebic meningoencephalitis include headache, nausea, vomiting, fever, loss of consciousness and seizures. In some cases, the disease can be fatal.

Diagnosis of amoebic meningoencephalitis is based on the detection of amoebae in the cerebrospinal fluid or in the brain of deceased people. Treatment consists of antibiotics and symptomatic therapy.

Prevention of amoebic meningoencephalitis includes following safety rules when swimming in fresh water and using a protective mask when working with water.
