Monochoriates: history, features and significance

Monochoriates is the term for twins that develop in the same chorion. The chorion is a membrane that surrounds the fetus in the womb and provides it with nutrition and oxygen. If two or more fetuses develop in the same chorion, they are called monochorionic twins.

Story

Monochoriates were discovered in 1886 by British anatomist William Hunter. He conducted research on corpses and noticed that some doubles had a common placental complex. It was subsequently discovered that monochoriates arise from a single fertilized egg, which divides into two or more embryos.

Peculiarities

Monochoriates have a number of features that distinguish them from other types of twins. Firstly, they are always of the same gender. Secondly, they may have varying degrees of similarity in appearance and genetic material.
