The scalene muscles are a set of muscles. Located on the sides of the spine in the front of the neck from the C7 thoracic vertebra to the upper cervical vertebrae. Unlike other scalene muscles, this one does not extend to the chest and begins from the transverse process of the cervical vertebra. Raises the VI–VIII ribs, rotates the scapula inward, lowers the shoulder. Controls head movement and participates in the act of swallowing. Function and significance of the scalene muscle:
turns the shoulder, raising the shoulder girdle promotes pronation
