Supraspinatus Fossa

Supraspinous fossa

The supraspinatus fossa (lat. fossa supraspinata) is a depression on the posterior surface of the scapula above its spine. Located between the supraspinatus process and the spine of the scapula. The supraspinatus fossa contains the subspinous bursa - the synovial sheath of the rotating cuff.

The supraspinatus fossa is triangular in shape, its apex directed downward. The bottom of the fossa is formed by the supraspinatus fascia. At the bottom of the supraspinatus fossa is the supraspinatus foramen, through which the tendon of the long head of the biceps brachii passes.

The supraspinatus fossa plays an important role in the formation of the shoulder joint by providing attachment and glide for the rotator cuff tendons.
