Nevus (birthmark) Ota is a benign skin neoplasm. There is currently little cause for concern about these types of birthmarks and there is no need to remove them. If the spot is on the upper half of the torso, it will require constant monitoring and may require removal at puberty. The hair on some areas of the patch or the skin above it may become lighter due to bleaching. The nevus may rise above the skin and curl at the tip: this phenomenon is called “cat face”.
