What is plantar papilloma?

Photo of plantar papilloma

The spine is a benign neoplasm on the sole and toes, the size of which is 3-10 mm. The shape of plantar papilloma is round or oval, the color is brownish or pinkish, with black or bloody spots (these are thrombosed capillaries). The growth may protrude 1-2 mm above the surface of the skin.

In the initial stages, a plantar wart appears alone (horny wart). If the virus activity is high, daughter neoplasms form nearby, creating entire areoles consisting of several spines - up to 10 pieces.

Despite the fact that 80% of plantar papillomas are localized on the human foot, spines can also appear on the hands, palms, mucous membranes, face, genitals and groin area.

Note! As doctors note, plantar papillomas account for 1/3 of all visits to dermatologists.

At first, the patient feels slight discomfort at the site of wart formation. Then increasing itching appears, a small area of the skin turns white, and one or more brownish-reddish dots appear in the middle of the neoplasm. At this stage, the body is still able to cope with plantar papilloma on its own. With good immunity, self-healing can occur within a period of 2 weeks to 1 year.

If the spine on the leg increases in diameter, it will not go away on its own, so you need to help the body cope with the disease.

First of all, plantar warts do not look very aesthetically pleasing. For adults, their presence serves as a refusal to issue a certificate for visiting the pool, and a child may be prohibited from attending a preschool institution, sports sections, developmental clubs, and children's centers.

Therefore, if you or your children are faced with this problem, study the causes of plantar papillomas so as not to increase the risk of them spreading throughout the body, and then start removing warts.

Causes of plantar papilloma

The cause of this skin formation is infection with the human papillomavirus. Usually it is in a dormant state and does not cause discomfort. However, there are a number of factors that contribute to the activation of HPV and its manifestation in the form of plantar papillomas.

The formation of a spine on the leg provokes:

  1. Decreased immunity. Vitamin deficiency, stress, bad habits, poor nutrition, poor environment - these and other factors mercilessly hit the human immune system, weakening the body's defenses. All degenerative processes are put into action, including the formation of plantar warts.
  2. Visiting saunas, swimming pools, baths. These are the places where HPV infections most often occur. In addition, the growth of plantar papillomas is facilitated by a moist, warm environment, which is maintained in places of public hygiene. A person with a wart walks on the tile, followed by a healthy person with a cut, callus or foot rubbed by shoes, and infection is guaranteed.
  3. Failure to comply with personal hygiene rules. This applies to late changes of socks, wearing someone else's shoes, and refusal to use soap when washing feet.
  4. Contact with open ground. Here it is worth mentioning separately about summer residents. When constantly working on the ground, careful treatment of the feet is especially important. It is also necessary to work in shoes, and in case of wounds, abrasions and cuts, seal them and use socks.
  5. Wearing uncomfortable shoes. Compression and rubbing do not have the best effect on the condition of the feet, provoking the development of plantar papillomas.
  6. Excessive sweating or dry feet. In the first case, the number of harmful bacteria that contribute to the growth of warts increases, in the second, the structure of the epithelium is disrupted, due to breaks in which they sprout.
  7. Foot deformity. People with flat feet, club feet, deforming osteoarthritis, and arthritis are at risk.
  8. Poor circulation in the extremities. This includes diseases with trophic problems such as varicose veins, diabetes, and atherosclerosis.

Methods for treating splints on the foot

If you suspect you have a thorn, you should immediately consult a doctor for a diagnosis. A dermatologist treats plantar papillomas. He will conduct a dermatoscopy - a study in which the nature of the wart is determined under a microscope. If the doctor has doubts about its benignity, a consultation with an oncologist may be necessary. If there is no doubt and you have plantar papilloma, it is also necessary to conduct an ultrasound examination to determine the depth of the spine. The whole insidiousness of the growth is that, unlike its “relatives,” it grows not outward, but inward, deep into the tissues. The type of treatment for a plantar wart and whether a person can cope with the problem on his own or will need the help of specialists depends on the degree of germination.
