Papilloma on the eyelid is a benign neoplasm, the cause of which is infection of the body with the human papilloma virus. Treatment of such growths is difficult due to the location and the danger of damage to the eyeball when using potent drugs in therapy. Therefore, it is important to learn more about the causes and treatment of papillomas on the eyelids.

Causes of papillomas on the eyelid

HPV 3d model

Papilloma on the eyelid is a fairly common neoplasm, which is often treated not by a dermatologist (as happens with other types of papillomas), but by an ophthalmologist, since the treatment of diseases in the area of the eyeballs has its own strict limitations and features aimed at minimizing possible mechanical effects on the eyes and causing damage to vision.

The main reason for the occurrence of any epidermal inclusions related to papillomas is infection and activation of the human papillomavirus in the body. However, there are also provoking factors that contribute to the activation of HPV and the spread of formations throughout the epidermis.

Let us consider in detail the causes of papillomas on the eyelids:

  1. Decreased immunity. This leads to a decrease in the body’s production of special proteins that resist attacks from viruses that cause various diseases, including the human papillomavirus. Even if you are infected with HPV, strong immunity will help restrain its activation, and with reduced immunity, the causative agent of the disease will actively multiply, as a result of which epidermal inclusions called papillomas are formed on the body.
  2. Parasites in the body. Any viruses and pathogenic bacteria are activated in an environment fed by the waste products of parasites. And this applies not only to intestinal and liver worms, but also, above all, to those parasites that live on the skin. The formation of papillomas can be promoted by the disease demodicosis. This is a disease that occurs as a result of an increased concentration of demodex eyelash mites on the skin of the eyelids and eyelashes. Therefore, those who are infected with demodex need to begin treatment of papilloma on the eyelids by fighting the mite.
  3. Eye diseases. In addition to general immunity, there is such a thing as local immunity. In patients suffering from ophthalmological diseases, papillomas on the eyelid occur much more often than in those who are not susceptible to these ailments. Sometimes, to activate the virus in a given area, it is not enough to have a serious diagnosis, but also eye fatigue or dry eyelids.
  4. Neglect of personal hygiene rules. Each part of the body needs its own towel. This is especially true for the face. HPV present in the body can be released through a scratch on any skin area and can be transferred to the eyelids when using one towel for all parts of the body. Using someone else's towels is out of the question.
  5. Using someone else's cosmetics. Quite often, mothers and daughters, as well as girlfriends, share decorative cosmetics among themselves. For example, mascara, eye shadow, eyeliner, eyelash curler, etc. This contributes to the active spread of the human papillomavirus and leads to the formation of papillomas on the eyelids.
  6. Visiting beauty salons. Unfortunately, instruments are not always properly sanitized in beauty salons. Therefore, procedures such as dyeing eyelashes and eyebrows, lengthening eyelashes with natural and artificial materials, applying make-up and permanent makeup may be accompanied by the introduction of HPV into the body.
  7. Hypothermia. The eyes react very strongly to hypothermia. For example, barley often forms on the eyelids after freezing. This is the result of the activation of staphylococcus, which actively develops when the body’s thermoregulation is disrupted. The papillomavirus also reacts to external stimuli, finding an opportunity to become more active and cause cell mutation, which then manifests itself in the form of papillomas.
  8. Stressful situations. Stress, along with a decrease in immunity, causes a block in the production of interferon in the body, which leads to an active increase in the concentration of HPV. If you are depressed, before removing a papilloma on your eyelid, start taking mild sedatives. This will help speed up the process of tumor therapy.

Like many other lumps on the skin, at the initial stage of the appearance of papilloma on the eyelid, itching may be felt. Also, this process may be accompanied by redness of the sclera of the eye, difficulty blinking, a feeling of a foreign body, dryness or, on the contrary, tearing.

First of all, the patient will suspect that he has stye. At first glance, it looks the same as papilloma, especially if we are talking about cold barley - chalazion. But over time, the appearance of this neoplasm will change. That is why it is very important that the disease is diagnosed by a doctor. Because these ailments have completely different treatment principles.

To understand how to remove papilloma on the eyelid, you must first understand what types of growths affect this area, what they look like and how they differ.

Types of eye papillomas:

  1. Condylomas acuminata. These are small growths, up to 5-6 mm long, practically indistinguishable in color from the skin on which they form. So named because they have pointed edges. These formations can be either single or group, connecting up to 10 and sometimes more growths. They form predominantly in the anogenital area, but can also affect the edge of the eyelid. They are quite traumatic and, if mechanically damaged, can cause severe bleeding. More actively than others, this papilloma on the eyelid degenerates from benign to malignant.
  2. Filiform papillomas. They are represented by long thread-like growths attached to the skin by a thin stalk. They can have a color from pale pink, almost white, to dark brown. They are located both independently and in groups. They reach no more than 10 mm in length. They are located, as a rule, not at the edge, but closer to the middle of the eyelid. In case of mechanical damage, bleeding is rare. However, this can lead to the formation of a malignant tumor or infection of the healthy epidermis nearby and the appearance of new papillomas.
  3. Flat warts. They are extremely rare for centuries. They are inclusions that protrude only slightly above the surface of the epidermis. Often their height does not exceed 1 mm. They grow much stronger in breadth. This is where they got the name flat. The color on the eyelids ranges from practically no different from the epidermis on which they are located to bright pink.

The listed types of eyelid papillomas affect mainly men and women after 30 years of age. Usually at this age there is a peak in sexual activity (and sexual intercourse is one of the most common ways of transmitting HPV) and there is a slight decrease in immunity compared to adolescence and student age.

Such types of warts as vulgar and plantar warts are not found on the eyelids.

Methods for treating papillomas on the eyelids

A doctor should prescribe methods for treating papillomas on the eyelids. This way you will protect yourself from an incorrect diagnosis, speed up recovery and, most importantly, prevent the degeneration of a benign tumor into a malignant one, and also preserve your vision. Treatment begins with boosting immunity through the use of balanced vitamin complexes or immunomodulators. At the same time, antiviral therapy is used. Unfortunately, in the fight against formations on the eyelids, such a common and effective method as cauterization with medications is not available. It can damage the eyeball and damage vision. But surgical removal of papillomas on the eyelids is permitted, which is used if the use of vitamins and antiviral agents has not produced results.

Isoprinosine for papillomas on the eyelid

The use of antiviral drugs is extremely important, because it will be difficult to get rid of papillomas on the eyelids using vitamins and immunomodulators alone. And if, when papillomas appear on the extremities of the arms and legs, the skin of the body, face and even in intimate areas, you can additionally enlist the support of local antiviral drugs in the form of gels, creams, drops or sprays, then given such an easily vulnerable area as the eyes, only internal ones will help antiviral agents.

Surgical methods for removing papillomas on the eyelid

Laser removal of papillomas on the eyelid

If none of the treatment options proposed above gave the desired results, and this happens with certain physiological characteristics of the body, papillomas on the eyelid should be removed surgically.

Types of procedures:

  1. Surgical method. Given the delicacy of the operating area, surgical removal is indicated as a last resort if there is a suspicion of malignancy of the formation. It is also used if the papilloma is located from the inside of the eyelid and can injure the eyeball. It involves admission to a hospital, the use of strong anesthetics, specific rehabilitation carried out by hospital doctors, and does not exclude the formation of a postoperative scar. The price of surgical intervention for papillomas on the eyelid is calculated individually in each individual case.
  2. Cryodestruction. Cauterizing papilloma with liquid nitrogen is a fairly common option for removing lumps caused by HPV. Penetration of the refrigerant occurs throughout the entire depth of the papilloma. Therefore, the doctor must assess how deeply it has grown into the eyelid. If this is a superficial formation, it can be removed using this method; if the papilloma has penetrated deeply or is located at the very edge of the eyelid, it is better not to use this option. The price of cryodestruction is 360 rubles. (150 UAH).
  3. Laser removal. It is the most optimal method for removing papillomas on the eyelid. Excision is performed using an ultra-thin laser beam, which eliminates contact of any materials with the skin. Thanks to this, the likelihood of infection or infection of the epidermis is minimized. In addition, this procedure is significantly less likely to cause the formation of scars than other types of surgical removal. Most often, manipulation occurs without the use of anesthetics. However, if the patient experiences pain during the procedure, topical pain relievers may be used. The price of laser therapy is 2900 rubles. (1300 UAH).
