The paraganglion is a peripheral parasympathetic ganglion that performs an integrating, vasomotor function in the vessels of the brain, pelvis and abdominal cavity in accordance with its non-chromaphynx cells, and also contains neurosecretory cells secreting enkephalin and angiotensin II oxidase (SAO2). This paraganglion consists of a collection of paraganglion cells that vary in shape, size, and origin, making it a more complex anatomical structure in terms of histology than other types of chromofract paraganglia. This type of research was first proposed in 1937 by O'Gormann, who named it chemoacting, which was later renamed non-chromofractic paraganglia.
