What is a paratonsillar abscess?
A peritonsillar abscess is an inflammatory process in the tissue located near the palatine tonsil. This is a formation that consists of many connective tissue septa and has an oval shape. An abscess can occur independently due to inflammation or injury, or it can be a complication of tonsillitis. Mediastinitis, a purulent inflammation of the mediastinal tissue, often occurs as a complication of peritonsillar abscess.
Causes of paratonsillar abscesses
The occurrence of these formations is most often associated with multiple tissue microtraumas, for example, when the mucous membrane is damaged by teeth or the formation of the so-called traumatic syndrome. Such a process cannot occur on its own; interaction with the infection is required. That is, the paratonsillar region is the point where the infection meets an obstacle.
Very often, the tonsil is considered to be more susceptible to infections than any other place in the human body. This is facilitated by a number of factors: * the location of the tonsil and its blocking of the openings for the passage of saliva; * a sufficient number of nerve endings in the tonsil area;
