Perioral dermatitis

Dermatitis perioralis is an inflammation of the skin around the mouth. It manifests itself in the form of redness, peeling, cracking and itching of the skin near the lips.

Causes

Perioral dermatitis can occur due to various factors:

  1. Contact dermatitis is an allergic reaction to ingredients in lip cosmetics, toothpaste, saliva or food.

  2. Irritative contact dermatitis - irritation from frequent moistening of the skin with saliva, from constant wiping of the mouth with napkins.

  3. Atopic dermatitis is a chronic inflammatory skin disease that often occurs around the mouth.

  4. Infections - fungal, bacterial or viral.

  5. Weather conditions - cold, wind.

  6. Hormonal changes.

  7. Stress.

Treatment

Treatment is aimed at eliminating the cause of the disease. Recommendations include:

  1. Avoid contact with irritants and allergens.

  2. Use moisturizers and emollients.

  3. Use mild steroid creams to reduce inflammation.

  4. Antihistamine and antibacterial ointments and tablets.

  5. Treating a fungal or bacterial infection.

With timely treatment, symptoms usually subside within 1-2 weeks. In chronic forms, long-term therapy may be required. It is important to identify and eliminate precipitating factors to prevent relapses.
