Periostitis Ossifying

Periostitis ossificans - (p.ossificans), inflammation of the periosteum; more precisely ossification periostitis. Under the influence of inflammation affecting the periosteal tissue, its connective tissue disintegrates and is subsequently replaced by bone substance. Etiology, pathogenesis of P. o. insufficiently studied. Usually the cause of the development of the process is injury, less often - chronic irritation. Osteomyelitis has a certain significance. Possible occurrence of P.O. as a result of a dog bite or insect bite.

Pathomorphologically, the process begins with the spread of inflammation from the soft tissues to the periosteum. In the future, the formation of spinous phlegmon, an acute inflammation of the periosteal tissue, may occur. Next, the periosteum undergoes atrophy, the fibers roughly change and are replaced by bone tissue.
