Peristil: anti-vomiting medicine
Peristil is an antiemetic drug manufactured by Dr. Reddy's Laboratories Ltd. in India. Its active ingredient, cisapride, belongs to the group of dopamine receptor inhibitors. Cisapride prevents vomiting by eliminating the effect of dopamine on its receptors in the brain.
Peristil comes in several dosage forms, including tablets of varying strengths and an oral suspension. It is used to treat a variety of gastrointestinal disorders, including gastroesophageal reflux, idiopathic and drug-induced gastroparesis, anorexia, functional and idiopathic constipation, distal ileus syndrome, postprandial functional dyspepsia, gallbladder hypokinesia, and regurgitation syndrome in newborns.
Like any medicine, Peristil may cause side effects. Some of them include dizziness, convulsions, extrapyramidal disorders, drowsiness, migraine, tremor, cardiac arrhythmias, xerostomia, pharyngitis, nausea, vomiting, dehydration, hepatitis, increased concentrations of liver enzymes in the blood, myalgia, edema and allergic reactions.
Overdose of Peristil can lead to serious consequences, including loss of the righting reflex, catalepsy, catatonia, hypotension, diarrhea and generalized convulsions. In case of overdose, seek medical help immediately.
Peristil has some contraindications, including hypersensitivity to the active substance, gastrointestinal bleeding, mechanical intestinal obstruction, intestinal or gastric perforation, pregnancy, breastfeeding and childhood.
Peristil may interact with other drugs, including anticholinesterase drugs and m-cholinomimetics, as well as inhibitors of the 3A4 isoenzyme of the cytochrome P450 system.
Overall, peristil is an effective antiemetic for the treatment of various gastrointestinal disorders. However, like any medicine, it must be taken only as prescribed by a doctor and in compliance with all instructions for use and dosage.
