Pliopithecus

Archaeologists recently discovered new remains of Pliopithecus, an extinct hominid that lived about 6 million years ago. This amazing discovery was one of the most significant discoveries of recent decades in the field of human evolution.

The name Pliopithecus comes from the Greek word pliops, meaning "flattened nose", and refers to the unique feature of these animals: their noses were enlarged and flattened, allowing them to breathe more easily at high altitudes. Research has shown that this change in the nose was an adaptation to living high above the ground and allowed Pliopithecus to inhale oxygen from the high altitudes where it lived millions of years ago.
