Polymyxins

Polymyxins are a group of antibiotics that are used to treat infections caused by bacteria that are resistant to other antibiotics. They were discovered in the 1950s and have since become one of the most effective and widely used antibiotics.

Polymyxins are polypeptide antibiotics, that is, they are composed of many amino acids. They are highly active against many bacteria, including gram-negative bacteria such as Escherichia coli, Salmonella typhi, Shigella dysenteriae, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and others.

There are several types of polymyxins, such as polymyxin B, polymyxin M and polymyxin E. Each of them has its own characteristics and is used depending on the type of infection. For example, polymyxin B is used to treat severe urinary tract infections, and polymyxin E is used to prevent and treat bacterial infections in immunocompromised patients.

However, like any antibiotics, polymyxins can cause side effects such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, headache and others. Therefore, before starting treatment, you must consult your doctor and follow his recommendations.

Overall, polymyxins remain one of the most effective and safe antibiotics for treating various infections. However, before starting treatment, you should definitely consult your doctor to avoid possible side effects and complications.
