Polyodontia

Polyodontia or hyperodontia is a developmental anomaly in which a person has an excess number of teeth. Supradentia can occur as a result of a developmental disorder of the jaw or due to a genetic mutation.

Polyodontia is not a disease, but it can lead to a number of health problems, such as malocclusion, misaligned teeth, problems with chewing and speaking, and aesthetic defects.

Treatment of polyodontia can be surgical or orthodontic. Surgical treatment includes removal of excess teeth and correction of the jaw. Orthodontic treatment may include the use of braces, aligners, or other appliances to correct the bite and straighten the teeth.

It is important to see a dentist as early as possible to avoid complications and receive the correct treatment. Polyodontia can be detected in the early stages of a child's development, when teeth have not yet fully erupted. If you notice your child has excess teeth, contact your dentist for a consultation.

Polyodontia is an anomaly of dental development in which an additional tooth appears in the dentition. Normally, a person has 32 teeth.

Depending on the number of abnormal teeth there are:

  1. Monodontia – one extra tooth.
  2. Polyodontia of 2 types:
    1. Polyodontia with bifurcation (two additional teeth).
    2. Polyodontia without bifurcation (one additional tooth).
  3. Hyperodontia (supradentia):
    1. Hyperodontia with one additional tooth.
    2. Multiple hyperodontia – several additional teeth.
