Fetal presentation (praesentatio) is the position of the fetus during pregnancy and childbirth. It determines which part of the fetus will be adjacent to the entrance to the mother’s pelvis.
There are several types of presentations:
-
Head presentation is the most favorable option when the fetal head is located above the entrance to the pelvis. Occurs in approximately 96% of cases.
-
Breech presentation - the buttocks or legs of the fetus are located above the entrance to the pelvis. Considered unfavorable for childbirth.
-
Transverse position - the fetus is located perpendicular to the axis of the pelvis. Extremely dangerous presentation requiring emergency caesarean section.
-
Oblique position - the fetus is at an angle to the axis of the mother's pelvis. May complicate passage through the birth canal.
Correct fetal presentation is extremely important for the normal course of pregnancy and childbirth. It is determined using ultrasound. If the presentation is unfavorable, the doctor may recommend a cesarean section.
