Menstrual psychosis (from the Latin mens - month and ...itis - a suffix denoting illness), or mental amenorrhea - an abortive erased form of schizophrenia, manifested by dysmenorrhea, depersonalization, impaired consciousness. The term was proposed by S.Hautmann (1895). In ICD-10, the disease is considered a sign of schizophrenia. However, most researchers consider it a functional brain lesion of various origins. The onset of manifestations of the syndrome is preceded by a period of normal or almost normal menstruation lasting from 6 months to two years. It is characterized by a feeling of lack of air, anxiety, derealization and fear of death, which is perceived as absolute and comes suddenly. If a woman lacks attention and anxiety during menstruation, psychosis may manifest itself when menstruation does not occur. This condition, as a rule, lasts about 7 days, is accompanied by the patient’s lethargy, lack of mood, increased appetite, and periodic disturbances of consciousness are also noted. Typically, such a diagnosis is made of low-grade schizophrenia.
