What is better powder or foundation?

In fact, both foundation and powder, naturally, if they were purchased in trusted stores, do not pose any threat to the skin when used correctly. On the contrary, they are even useful to a certain extent. Let's look at the benefits of foundations, without dividing them into categories for now:

How to apply makeup correctly with foundation and powder

1. It doesn’t matter what you use - powder or foundation, it is important that they are not applied to the “bare” face. A base or at least a moisturizer is required. But applying compact powder over foundation is contraindicated. Compact powder is greasy, and if you apply it over foundation, you risk making your makeup heavier and getting a mask effect. Compact powder can only be used as a “travelling” option, when there is a need to quickly correct “shiny makeup.” If you use compact powder as a base makeup, then it is applied on top of the base or regular face cream. By the way, loose powder can also be applied over the base. But only if you have an ideal complexion.

In makeup, where foundation is not used, everything happens according to the same scheme, but bypassing the stage of applying foundation. As for correction products, if the imperfections are minor, then the powder will easily cover the pigment of the correction products. If the area is large, then you can’t do without foundation.

How to make foundation from powder

So, you are still an ardent supporter of using only one foundation - for example, powder - and it doesn’t matter to you what the rules dictate, but an unfortunate nuisance has occurred in the form of a small imperfection on the face that can only be covered by foundation, and in stock No. Or you also use foundation, but it does not match the tone of your now tanned skin. Everything is simple here. It is enough to take any face cream you like or the most ordinary baby cream, or at least the one that is available and mix it with the powder you have. Naturally, crumbly. There is no loose powder nearby, then be patient and remove the compact product in thin shavings so that it literally turns into dust. Better yet, vigorously rub the powder compact with a makeup brush, so that as much of the product as possible is separated from the base in the form of a fine suspension.

Then the powder and cream should be mixed in a 1:1 consistency. If the resulting shade completely satisfies you, use the resulting mixture as a foundation. If you need a lighter shade, dilute it with a little cream. If, on the contrary, you need a darker product, increase the powder content.

How to make powder from foundation

A completely opposite situation may arise, when you categorically do not recognize powder, but something needs to be done about the constantly “floating” makeup, and all the powder has simply come out. The opposite principle applies here, and powder can be made from foundation.

However, it will take more time. In order to transform the foundation into powder, it will have to be “freed” from excess moisture. The first method is to simply dry a small portion of the cream, but if it is quite greasy, you will have to wait more than one hour.

A faster and more reliable way is to place a small portion of cream in the microwave for just a few seconds. After the cream has cooled, the dried mass should be crushed into dust. Naturally, the resulting powder will have a more pigmented shade than the foundation originally had. To achieve a lighter natural color, mix dried foundation with rice flour or talcum powder. They will not only lighten homemade powder, but will also help save your face from excess shine and sweat.

As an option, you can add powdered highlighter or light shadows to the dried foundation, but only in natural shades. In this case, you will get an even more interesting version of “powder”, which will give your face a delicate satin glow.

The composition may also include white and red clay, flower oils, moisturizing components and vitamins, which allow the product not only not to clog pores and not provoke inflammation, but, on the contrary, to care for the skin.

Which is better: powder or foundation?

Powder and foundation belong to the same category (actually foundations), but at the same time they have different characteristics and properties. At the same time, there is not and cannot be a clear answer to the question of which is better: under different circumstances, both powder and foundation can be useful.

6 main types of face powder

The first image that comes to mind when you mention powder is pressed dry powder in a beautiful package with a mirror. Indeed, compact powders are the most popular, but far from the only ones. Let's talk about each type of face powder in more detail.

Compact powder

The same powder with a mirror and a puff (or sponge) that will definitely be found in any woman’s bag, backpack or evening clutch.

1. It can be used both to create daytime makeup (on its own or in combination with foundation) and to adjust it throughout the day. Use compact powder to instantly create a more matte look.
2. Compact powder can be applied in a denser layer than loose powder (a sponge is suitable for this), or distributed in a translucent layer with a powder puff or a wide fluffy natural bristle brush.

Loose powder

The second most popular type of powder. Loose powder is lighter in texture than compact powder and more reminiscent of finely ground flour.

1. It does not cover redness or other skin imperfections; its main task is to mattify the skin and fix the foundation. It is applied in a thin layer over the foundation with a wide brush. Loose powder perfectly removes oily shine and evens out the complexion.
2. Correcting makeup with it throughout the day is not so convenient. As a rule, loose powder is produced in large round jars that take up enough space. In addition, a brush is rarely included in the kit.
3. There is another reason why it is better to use loose powder at home: when applied, powder particles fly in all directions and can stain clothes.
4. Loose powder blends perfectly with the tone and spreads perfectly over the skin, but you should not apply it if the moisturizer or nourishing cream is not completely absorbed: the powder will end up in spots.
5. It's almost impossible to overdo it with loose powder, but if you do apply too much, simply sweep over your face with a clean, wide brush. All excess will be removed immediately.
6. The shade of loose powder can be either a little darker or a little lighter than your skin tone. Most likely, the difference will not be noticeable on the face, since the product is applied in a translucent layer.

Cream powder

Its properties are more reminiscent of a light cream foundation, but a little denser - so much so that it can be placed in a package of compact powder.
