The petrous groove is a topographic anatomical region, devoid of fiber, located between the superior orbital fissure and the apex of the mastoid process of the temporal bone outside the lower surface of the maxillary sinus. The fiber of the groove contains the superior auricular nerve, artery and temporomandibular joint. Identified by the nature of the thickening of the bones at the junction of the upper external arches of the temporal and jaws, creating a contrast with the clear lines of the visceral edge of the occipital bone.
