The Sylvian fissure, also known as the fissure of Sylvius or the fissure of the lateral sulcus, is one of the key structures of the brain, playing an important role in neurology and neuroanatomy. Named after the French anatomist François Silvius, it is a deep groove that separates the two main lobes of the brain - the frontal and temporal.
The Sylvian fissure has a characteristic shape and location in the central part of the brain. It begins on the top surface of the brain near the frontal lobes and continues deep into the brain, extending to the back of the head. Its anatomical features make it highly visible on medical images such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and computed tomography (CT).
The functional significance of the Sylvian fissure lies in its connection with the motor and sensory functions of the brain. Due to its position and structure, it serves as the boundary between two important areas of the brain - the motor cortex and the somatosensory cortex.
